I have been working with Children and Youth for about 12 years now. It all started with a drama camp that I helped run when I was in grade 9, I loved this drama camp so much that I wanted to help to make it happen. This experience inspired me to continue my work with Children and Youth.
In the summer I turned 16, I went to live in Montreal with the Summer Work Student Exchange (SWSE) program - at the time this was a program funded by the Canadian government, it has since been taken over by the YMCA. My placement in Montreal was at a daycare. This placement changed my life, as I quickly learned that I was very good at working with young children.
Later that year I was employed by the City of Welland to run and implement a drama program in the City of Welland All Star Day Camp. I also partnered up with the Welland Tribune and The City of Welland and created Youth Ink, which was a bi-weekly youth page in the Welland Tribune. Youth Ink was an amazing experience, I led a group of 9 youth and together we created something completely unique. We also decided to put on an arts festival in Welland and began The Welland Youth Arts Extravaganza. This experience led me to a position as Youth Coordinator at the city's youth centre, Youth Innovations.
My experience with the Welland Tribune ignited a new love in my life; a love of writing and journalism. In University, I began working for The Brock Press and took a leave from my work with youth. However, my passion for youth and youth rights never ceased. I continued to write about youth culture and continued to support youth culture, specifically in my hometown, Welland.
After University, I worked several different jobs; I was a Bilingual Customer Service Representative, a Barista, and then I was a Flight Attendant for Sunwing Airlines. Later, I got a job as an Assistant Event Planner for the Ontario Trillium Foundation, which welcomed me back into the non-profit sector. I worked at The Ontario Trillium Foundation for about 3 years and simultaneously started a movement in Welland to open a new Youth Centre. That Youth Centre was opened about a year after our initiative.
While I was very happy working at The Ontario Trillium Foundation, I still felt that something was missing. I knew that I wanted to be a teacher. With this decision, I left OTF and moved to Korea to teach ESL.
Korea was an amazing experience. Teaching in the classroom was a whole new learning experience. In the summer I ran and implemented a drama program where we performed 2 one-act plays. I also had children work with Puppet Theatre and constantly used drama strategies in my day-to-day teaching.
When I got back from Korea, I continued to work with children and youth with the YMCA of Niagara. I worked for Youth Action and Kids Club in various after school programs all over Niagara, I also ran a cooking program for children called "You're the Chef". Later, I was asked to run a new initiative for the YMCA called "Y House" which is a youth centre in inner-city community housing in Niagara Falls. My last position with the YMCA was as the Arts and Crafts Specialist for YMCA of Niagara Day Camp.
I am now at OISE (Ontario Institute for Studies in Education), University of Toronto, working on getting my BEd, and on Monday (Oct 31st) I will begin my practicum in a Toronto school. It will take place at a very large public school in Scarborough, I will be teaching in a grade 5 "core" classroom. This blog will be a journal of my experiences there.
